About you guys. Glad to have you here today. I know you’re super excited because today we’re talking about your guy.

Johan Cruyff Yes he’s one of my favorite soccer players of all time and one of my buddies too. I have to do a shout out to Derek Sharp. So he loves him even more than I do.

I believe you guys have a bind over Johan Cruyff. I love when you guys start talking about him because you just you just go all out. So I’m just going to kick it to you. I know you have a go quote I know you are talking about Johan. Johan Croy if you told us that you love everything about this guy and why don’t you tell us a little bit about him and then give us your go quote for today.

Yes sure. Can I say good quote to you.

Whatever you say.

So goat quote that’s fun to say. So I love everything about this guy. He was a Dutch professional footballer and a coach. He won the Ballon d’Or or three times which means the Golden Ball the Golden Ball award that they give to the best European player. So he won that three times and he was the most the most famous advocate and promoter of the total football philosophy which is your favorite.

I love it. And that’s what I have to talk about Tofel. So

total football is the idea that at any given moment players can switch and play different positions. So it it can out of that chaos to the other team. So their team doesn’t know what’s going on. They see players switching and moving and it causes confusion. But for the players doing it it’s just a natural flow and progression of the game. So it’s lovely. So sometimes you see a forward drop back and they play defense and you see a defender move forward and stay up there for a while Tulsa Soccer Training.

So it’s just a beautiful idea and concept that the Dutch did back in the 70s and I want to say something about this because I’ve seen you watched this whole concept and discussed it with Derek Sharp whom you love like a brother from another mother and father and you look like so delighted and just filled with glee when you see it done well who performs total football the best in your opinion. Who do you love to see do that. Is a face right now. He’s getting excited.

I love the Dutch. The Dutch do it the best. I would say that Brazil also has that type of total football. They may not call it that but they have a brand of total football that is equally as beautiful it probably has more flair. But I just love seeing the Dutch play it and some people say you know the way Spain has been playing you know last I’d say 15 years 16 years they actually have a brand of total football too that a lot of people like in Barcelona and I-X. So those are the teams I can think off oh look don’t let me forget my favorite team Arsenal.

They had an arsenal and we talked about your boy Arsene Wenger like if you vodcast ago OK. But this is Kreiss day. So yes you have some more details about Royce.

Yes yes so busy Kroy is is considered to be one of the greatest players in all of football history. He was a part of the revolution within the Dutch football and their rise from obscurity to powerhouse within the sport.

OK I have a question about this. What what was going on. How were they so obscure were they not good like what’s the history there do you know.

Tulsa Soccer Training Well yeah a little bit about. So what happens is they’re developing a team and they’re playing and they’ve learned some concepts from English coaches. But what happens is in the 60s in the 70s which is like to me a very dynamic time to live in all of society world world society. And so there’s a group of players that get together and they had this bond because they played together at I-X. They end up playing together on the national team and they move the ball and they flow and have a strong leader as a player on the field and they have a strong coach with an idea as well and he takes like for instance a field player and puts him in goal and uses. So he uses his feet more and so all these things together they combine to form this team that is that gels and they all have a flow and they move together so if one player moves forward and the wind drops back to cover for them if the one presses they all move together to press to get the ball and if one drops they all drop so they move together in a unit and it’s not something that you can just go out and just teach right away. It’s something that is dynamic and it requires players with great understanding great technique to be able to do this and that.

What was so special about it is that it had never really been done to that level before. Correct correct.

It caused a lot of confusion for teams that didn’t know what to do.

They know how to deal with it. Yeah. That’s right. I see. So what else about Roiphe. What else can you tell us. All right so sorry about the notes.

It’s good it’s good it’s part of it. I get so excited I just go that’s great. Don’t apologize.

So Kroy has a very distinct way of looking at and discussing soccer. He had exceptional vision on the pitch. He could visualize passes that no one else could see and he had a profound understanding of the ebb and flow of the game. He knew how to control and manipulate the flow of the game for his favor. It was called he basically referred to as space manipulation. He would make more space when you had the ball and create less space when he did not. Him and his team together so the idea is that when we have the ball we spread out and we take over the field and when we don’t we make a compact and tight.

So the other team can’t move around this and this is part of their total football philosophy. Right. And this is going on unbeknownst to the other teams just this this dynamic expression this expansion and then this you know tightening.

Yes that’s correct. Tulsa Soccer Training ┬áThat’s correct. And you know these are the reasons why we look at him as a goat. Greatest Of All Time. So here’s what he had to say. Technique is not being able to juggle a ball 1000 times.

Anyone can do that by practicing then you can work in a circus technique is passing the ball with one touch with the right speed at the right foot of your teammate.

OK now that’s really interesting to me because of course we talk about like technique and how it’s important you know and I don’t think he’s knocking technique here easy. No not at all. What is he saying.

He’s saying that there’s layers to technique. So yeah you can learn to juggle right but it’s how you apply those touches later on. So let me give you an example. All right. So let’s say I learned a new skill on how to chip a ball. And for those of you don’t know what chipping is it’s when you wedge your toes underneath the ball to get to rise and fall quickly Tulsa Soccer Training.

So let’s say I learned to do this in practice over and over and over again. And now I’m in a game in a situation where I see a player my teammate making a run in front of me. But there’s two players in between men and that player. And so I’m trying to figure out how can I get this ball to him if I could bend it around and it’s not going to work so I decided to chip it. So now I have to not only wedge my feet onto the ball and make it rise and drop quickly but I also have to decide where the ball needs to go. I need to decide if it’s going to be in front of them if it’s going to be directly to him. I also have to decide how much power to apply to the ball so that how high is it going to go. Is it going to a real high and come down or is it just going to just over the head or just over a foot of a player. Tulsa Soccer Training So I only do I have I have I mastered the technique but now I have to apply it with mastery as well.

Wow that was like beautiful. I want to give you like like an Alcoa later like an award like all the passion and knowledge I hope if you’re listening you feel that you feel that that passion that love and that insight. So all of this to say technique is important. It’s just you want to implement it in the most efficient and constructive way.

That’s correct. That’s correct. So is layered is very layered there’s many parts to it. But like you said you want to be able to not only do the actual technique or the skill but you want to apply it to the situation correctly too Tulsa Soccer Training.

Awesome. Well that is our time. Gosh that went so quickly it felt like didn’t it. Yeah that was so awesome. Thank you for joining us and sharing your experience and your passion your love for this game.

Thank you for having me once again
